One of the most famous soldiers assigned to the Benicia Barracks was Lieutenant Sam Grant later known as General Ulysses S. Grant Lincoln's Civil War Commander-in-Chief and later President of the United States.
   Grant's career in California was apparently very boring for the young officer as he was reprimanded by his commanding officer for excessive drinking.
